Holiday Career Tips: Keeping the Momentum of a Job Search Going During December.

The biggest mistake a job seeker can make is to take this time of year off from their job search.  There are plenty of opportunities to get hired at the end of the year and there is usually less competition because of that assumption that people aren’t hiring. And companies who are hiring now, usually move along the process very quickly. Don’t stop looking!

Here are some suggestions to keep positive energy flowing during the hectic time of the holiday season:

  1. Be prepared. Take this time of year to ensure that:
    1. Resume and cover letters are top notch, easy to read and tell your story.
  2. LinkedIn profile is current, and your contact information is easy to find.
  3. Target roles and target companies are identified.
  4. Volunteer – Giving back to your community not only feels good, but it’s a great opportunity to meet new people, network and gain a new skill. Many organizations are looking for volunteers in December.
  5. Attend holiday social events – Business associations and groups hold social events in December. Find a friend to go with and take advantage of these events to meet new people.  Every conversation shouldn’t be about your job search, but do make sure you have your elevator pitch ready to rock’n roll.

  1. Informational interviews – the last 2 weeks of December can be slower for some decision makers and they have more time for meetings. Set these up in advance to take advantage of this down time.
  2. Reconnect with your contacts – now is a good time to revisit your LinkedIn connections, talk with former colleagues and reach out to people in your network. Email them or send a greeting card.  Ask how they are doing and thank them for any help they’ve offered during this time. Be gracious.
  3. Stay Flexible – often, if there is an immediate need, interviews will happen very close to the holidays. Be willing to meet at unusual times to accommodate a recruiter’s busy schedule.

Many companies are also laying the ground work for hiring in December. If you’ve kept up with your search, you’ll be top of mind when a hiring manager is able to make the offer.

Being in transition can be an up and down time, and the holiday busyness can add to the stress!  Following some of these tips can help keep the job search momentum alive!  Good luck and we would love to hear what things have worked for you.
